Khan Suraiya Szapszal, a Short Biography (1873-1961)
Suraiya Szapszal, a Crimean Karaim Jew, was the last kagan of the Karaims. In his youth, he became included in many political activities in Russia, Turkey and Iran, and being a close associate of Atatürk, became influent in many reforms of the young republic. Later he tended more to scientific works, and created fundamental works in Karaim language, history and culture. He was always of the idea that Karaims were originally Turks.<
