Abstract

THE CHANGING NATURE OF THE THREATS DIRECTED TO SECURITY OF BLACK SEA REGION: ASYMMETRICAL THREATS AND THEIR EFFECTS TO THE REGION’S SECURITY
The Black Sea region is defined as a center of the world or an area that must be under dominance in order to control the center according to all modern geopolitical theories because of its geographical location. Because of that reason there has been a power struggle for dominance over it between the great powers throughout the history. There are a great deal of conflict points, which have historical roots to a great extent and triggered by above mentioned struggle, among the region states. However, the risk of asymmetric threats in the region has risen considerably especially in the post-Cold War era, as it is in the whole world. The asymmetric threats manifesting in the form of energy security (in the sense of procurement and transmission) and terrorism as well as human, drugs, weapons and nuclear material trafficking, started to set an important challenge to the security of the region by taking advantage of the instability surrounding the region, as well as the power gap created by conflict zones in the region. For that reason it is very important to analyze the above mentioned asymmetric threats in order to understand better the existing security environment in the region.
